Hawking's Hope

Hawking's Hope cantilevers out 24 feet, the base balances on a small steel foot and a single point, like peg-leg pirate. This is one of a series of twenty sculptures that I've been working on for many years. This series utilizes different bases and can be an armature for new ideas (eg. an armature for lace or paper dolls on AR-13). Its original concept was from a 2006 quote in a speech in Beijing from Stephen Hawking where he said we should work on spaceships to get off the planet in the next hundred years to avoid the inevitable self-inflicted apocalypse. This particular base utilizes the axle from an electric wheelchair, referencing the fact that at that time he held Newton's chair at the University of Cambridge.
